So the new Grand Prix in Azerbaijan which is interfering with the end of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is apparently officially named the Grand Prix of Europe. According to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :
The country is situated in southwestern Asia with the Great Caucasus Mountains to the north.
And then look at the map:
Azerbaijan is the country with the marker
So why is the EUROPEAN Grand Prix located in Asia?

The border between Europe and Asia (as generally considered) passes through Azerbaijan, so it may technically be in Europe.
But mainly it is there because Azerbaijan is a corrupt country willing to spend to give itself prominence.

The border is roughly a border between North and South border along the Caucasus rather than between East and West (Baku is normally still considered to be on the Asian side of the divide though):
Georgia and Azerbaijan have argued that the border should be placed further south though.

It’s hard to put an exact border between Europe and Asia, and it’s fun to see that the FIA is inconsequent on the matter. Last year the eastern part of Istanbul was said to be in Asia, so that World Rallycross could say they visited another continent (in addition to Europe and the Americas).
Azerbaijan has competed in the Eurovision lately though, so it’s probably correct to say they’re part of Europe. I’ve also heard that the European GP will be held in Melbourne next year.
